Ceramic coating gets talked about a lot, and the claims can get big. Here’s a straight look at what a ceramic coating actually does for your car, what it doesn’t do, and how to tell whether it’s worth it for you.
What ceramic coating is
Lumax G3 Ceramic is a nano coating engineered at the molecular level. It’s wiped onto your paint, metal and wheels, bonds to the surface and forms a slick, glass-like layer rated at 9H pencil hardness.
It comes in two formulas, 5-Year and 8-Year. Both use the same nanocomposite technology. The difference is how long they’re built to last.
What it does well
- Gloss: a deep, high-gloss shine that lasts for years.
- Water beading: the surface is insanely hydrophobic, so water beads up and sheets away.
- Easier washes: with a slicker surface, dirt has less to grab, so washes are faster.
- Resistance: it’s engineered for exceptional UV, scratch and chemical resistance.
- More than paint: it protects paint, metal and wheels.
Ceramic is about gloss and easy care.
What it doesn’t do
Ceramic is a thin coating. It isn’t designed to absorb rock chips or heal scratches. If chip and impact protection is what you’re after, that’s what LPPF® is for: a thicker, self-healing fluoropolymer sprayed over your factory finish.
| Ceramic | LPPF® | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Ceramic nano coating | Self-healing fluoropolymer |
| Best for | Gloss & easy cleaning | Chip & scratch protection |
| Self-healing | No | Yes |
| Surfaces | Paint, metal & wheels | Painted panels |
| Warranty | 5 or 8 years | 15 years |
How long it lasts
The 5-Year formula is built to last up to 5 years and the 8-Year formula up to 8 years, depending on environmental factors like sun exposure, climate and how the vehicle is washed. Each is backed by a matching 5- or 8-year warranty that’s registered for you at install, with no inspections required.
What care looks like
Ceramic care is simple. Give it 2 hours before you drive away, keep it dry for 24 hours, and wait 2 weeks before the first wash. After that, a gentle hand wash with a pH-neutral soap about once a month keeps it slick and beading. Skip wax, because it dulls the gloss and water beading.
So, is it worth it?
If you want your car to stay glossy and be easier to keep clean for years, ceramic is worth it, especially on a daily driver or lease. If you also want protection from chips and scratches, pair it with LPPF® or choose LPPF® on its own.
