Liquid PPF vs PPF: what’s the difference?

Paint protection film — PPF — has been the go-to way to protect a car’s finish from rock chips and road debris for years. Liquid PPF is a newer approach that delivers protection in a very different way. If you’re deciding between the two, here’s what actually separates them.

What is film PPF?

Film PPF is a clear plastic film that’s cut into panel-shaped pieces and stretched over your paint. It’s a proven way to absorb chips from rocks and road debris, and many premium films include heat-activated self-healing.

Because it’s a film, it comes with trade-offs. Every piece has edges, and edges can lift and collect dirt over time. Film can also peel and yellow as it ages, and a damaged section usually means removing and re-wrapping the whole panel.

What is liquid PPF?

Liquid PPF is sprayed onto your existing finish the same way a clear coat is applied, then cures into one continuous layer. Lumax LPPF® is a two-component, self-healing fluoropolymer — in effect, a protective clear coat over your factory clear coat.

There’s nothing to cut, stretch or trim, so there are no edges or seams. And because LPPF® is built on reversible hydrogen bonds, light scratches heal on their own.

Film wraps your paint. LPPF® becomes part of the finish.

Looks & finish

With film, anyone can usually spot the edges — around panel gaps, emblems and door handles. LPPF® cures into a crystal-clear layer with enhanced gloss and no visible lines, so your paint simply looks like your paint, only deeper.

Durability & upkeep

Both options stand up to everyday road abuse. The differences show up over the years:

  • Yellowing and peeling: film can do both as it ages. LPPF® never yellows and has no edges to peel.
  • Maintenance: film needs ongoing upkeep. LPPF® requires no inspections to keep its warranty.
  • Repairs: damaged film is typically re-wrapped panel by panel. LPPF® is 100% repairable.
  • Warranty: film warranties vary by brand. LPPF® is backed by a 15-year warranty.

Which is right for you?

Film PPF has a long track record, and plenty of drivers are happy with it. But if you want protection that’s invisible, never peels or yellows, heals light scratches and is backed for 15 years, liquid PPF is the more modern choice.
